Phonics

When we teach children to read and decode words, there are two important things for children to learn:  

  • the sounds represented by written letters 
  • how to blend the sounds together to read words.

Synthetic Phonics is a way of teaching reading. We first teach a small group of sounds, then practise blending the sounds to read words made up of those sounds, e.g. mat. Children are then taught more sounds and learn to blend those too.

Speedy recognition of the sound for each letter is really important too, so your child can blend them to read words easily.

We teach phonics throughout the school to ensure that children correctly pronounce each sound, understand that two letters can represent a single sound and practise blending sounds to read words efficiently and fluently.
